Artwork
ARTWORK TO BE BUILT UP OVER THE COURSE
To emphasise the fact that the Bible has one big story running through it - the coherence of the biblical metanarrative if you like – you’ll build up a piece of artwork that you add to each week. This makes explicit references to the books of the Bible, to tie in what young people have done to the actual Bible. It’s based on a diagram by Nick Page in his book The Bible Book – A User’s Guide (see PDF file below).
It may seem like a lot of work each week but we’d really encourage you to go for it as it will help your young people get to grips with the story.
Each week we give guidance for what you need to add to the artwork, but do feel free to use your own creativity. Details of what to do are given in each session, but an overview is provided here for you to refer to, and to help you imagine what the whole will look like. Don’t worry if you feel that you’re not very artistic, it’s all quite simple. No doubt there will be young people in your group who love art and will be able to help.
You will need to get hold of a large board to base the artwork on. We recommend thin MDF or hardboard so it will be hardwearing – you can get this from a DIY shop. Get a board where the ratio of the width to the height is about 3:2, so a piece 1m by 65cm would be great.
Use diluted PVA glue to stick things to the artwork. This dries clear so it doesn’t need to be applied too accurately. And it also seals the surface of the artwork so that it’s more durable. In fact, you could paint a whole layer of PVA across the artwork every so often to seal the surface.
You can find the names of the books of the Bible that you add to the artwork at the end of this section.
The 3 page PDF below shows the picture taken from The Bible Book by Nick Page, and an example of how your group's artwork could be developed as you go through the course. Click the link to download the file.
