WHAT'S THE STORY?

On March 11th 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan was part of the Japanese infrastructure damaged by a major earthquake and tsunami. The earthquake damaged the plant's power systems causing cooling operations to fail, leading to a series of explosions.

It's severity is now being rated at the same level as the Chernobyl disaster 25 years ago. Japanese officials say raising its severity to level 7 (the highest) reflects the total amount of radiation released since the emergency began, rather than any sudden incident.
