Watching movies is part of growing up in our Western world. In the cinema, on TV and on mobile platforms, films are at the heart of youth culture. Half of all 15 years olds go to the cinema at least once a month. Meanwhile, on any one evening on TV, there are hundreds of films screened on multiple channels. Cinema audiences are on the increase and streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime have made movies even more accessible. Films are as popular as ever in our culture and teenagers are the most important consumers for Hollywood business: many films are edited specifically to achieve a '12' rating in order to ensure young people will be queuing up to see them.
So why should we pay attention to such a seemingly frivolous thing as popular culture? Films are a fantastic measure of the world in which young people are growing up. Understand that world better and you'll be able to work more meaningfully in it. In their book Megatrends, John Naisbitt and Patricia Aburdene put it like this: 'Trends, like horses, are easier to ride in the direction they are already going...you may decide to buck the trend, but it is still helpful to know it's there.'
