Ten themes for young people to discover how to live differently and find their best life.

10:10 was created by our friends at Ugly Duckling, and adapted for use within Energize. It is a discussion-based resource for young people aged 11–17 that explores 10 core themes around living life well and exploring life in all its fullness. Each session has a series of PowerPoints to display to guide discussions. Energize has added some optional Christian content for use where appropriate.

Each session also has a LITE version, which is a smaller number of items for groups who don't have a lot of time to meet (such as school groups).

It starts by posing the question ‘how can we be happy?’ and through films, discussions, activities, experiments and personal reflection it gives young people the opportunity to explore transformative ideas around how we can learn to truly flourish. 10:10 is built on positive psychology, sometimes referred to ‘the study of what makes life most worth living’, or the ‘study of positive human functioning and flourishing’.

At the heart of these themes are spiritual virtues and values around how we live life well. 10:10 is about discovering the difference that can be made to our, and other people’s, well-being when we practise things like savouring, thankfulness, kindness and forgiveness, and when we develop healthy relationships and look after the mind, body and soul. Put simply, it’s about discovering what experts tell us can help us to live life well. In answering this question 10:10 seeks to develop an approach that shifts from telling young people what to do, to an exploration around practices that might work for them. The course content isn’t prescriptive and doesn’t offer a one size fits all approach, but will offer different ways young people can look after their own well-being within a broad evidence-based framework. You will also quickly discover that 10:10 doesn’t tend to focus on problems. You won’t find sessions on how to deal with anxiety, depression or self-harm. Whilst these are really important topics 10:10 is looking at how we can build the foundations for living life well.

Please note that throughout 10:10 we do encourage participants to seek help when life is difficult, and on the 10:10 website you will find details of places where young people can get support and resources that focus on wider mental health and well-being issues. As well as being a valuable resource for young people, 10:10 aims to facilitate adults (such as youth workers, chaplains and teachers) to create meaningful spaces where young people feel safe and are able to build supportive relationships. These relationships with trusted adults are important as they provide young people with opportunities to find support as they navigate life’s many challenges.

In summary, young people should be given the opportunity to explore how to find life in all its fullness. Ultimately, 10:10 aims to provide an opportunity for young people to discover how to live life well and discover the difference a 10:10 life can make.
